OilEcoDesulfur Research Project 2019
Sulphur removal from oil by Biodesulfurization (BDS) technology

PROJECT ACRONYM: OilEcoDesulfur (Βιοαποθείωση Πετρελαίου)

RPF PROJECT NUMBER: POST-DOC/0916/0121
RESTART 2016 – 2020 PROGRAMMES
PROGRAMME: DIDAKTOR (Post-Doctoral Researchers)

Project Summary

Sulphur compounds in liquid fuel are undesirable and the level of these compounds in diesel fuel is strictly regulated in the last 15 years for the European Union. These stringent regulations are imposing an urgent requirement for fuel terminals to produce fuels having ultra low sulfur content. One of the technologies commonly used to tackle this problem is the hydrodesulphurization that requires high temperatures and pressures and the exposure of crude oil fractions under severe conditions decreases the value of the fuel.

A promising “Eco Technology” is to employ Biodesulfurization (BDS) which it is a process that bacteria (liquid phase) are mixed with oil at ambient temperature and pressure and remove selectively organosulfur from oil fractions without degrading the carbon skeleton of the compounds. This project’s aim is to develop BDS technology as a strategy to remove Sulphur from oil.
